Time to Change event to tackle stigma - 28th April 10am-3pm
Colebrook Housing Society and PIPS (Plymouth Involvement and Participation Service) members are challenging the stigma attached to mental health by holding a special event in Plymouth City Centre on Saturday 28th April.
The free event forms part of the national Time to Change campaign to end mental health discrimination. PIPS is a service focussed on improving service user and carer involvement within mental health services and its members have been busy organising the event for months. The event is funded by the Lottery’s Awards for All grants scheme.
There will be an array of therapeutic interventions relating to the mental health of adults, adolescents and children to challenge stigma and promote health and wellbeing. Beauty students from City College Plymouth will be providing small complimentary beauty treatments and Plymouth College of Art and Design students will be offering free face painting for children. Local chef Jacques Marchal will be showcasing his culinary skills with a live cookery demonstration.
There will be performances and entertainment on stage throughout the day including samba band Crooked Tempo, local singer Megan Fellows, Onward Music Group, Plympton St Maurice Gospel Choir, belly dancing from Ameeradance, and street theatre from the Symbiotic Theatre Company.
PIPS member, Georgia says, “We hope to reach those with little or no experience or knowledge of mental health issues other than the negative images often portrayed in the media, and challenge their perception of what it means to suffer from mental ill health.”
Another PIPS member, Dot explains, “The event will promote positive understanding and acceptance, opposing negative discrimination which ultimately encourages better mental health and wellbeing.”
There really is something for everyone so come along. The Time to Change event takes place at the Plymouth Piazza on Saturday 28th April, 10am – 3pm.
