Drop In Services / Events / Training
People who care for others now have access to more help and support from a new
service. Colebrook Housing Society have launched
a new service called Carers Champions Plymouth. If you are an adult carer of
another adult, this service can provide advice and information about issues that
affect you, practical support and help you to get services that you need for
yourself or the person you care for.
We are also offering you a number of Drop in sessions in city wide locations,
Outreach in the community, Up to date information, Opportunities for training
and peer support.
Many people take on a caring role as part of their commitment to family and
friends and may not consider themselves as carers. These people are entitled to
help and support from our service.
This year’s Carers’ Week, Monday 14th to Sunday 20th June, is called ‘A Life of My Own’. We have been very busy behind the scenes planning events alongside other carers’ organisations in the city, particularly Carers UK. We are very excited about this partnership work and look forward to meeting up with friends old and new at some of the events. This timetable below shows what we have organised; do watch out in the local papers for updates on this information and additional activities. Once again, we have vouchers available towards meals at Leandra Restaurant throughout the week.
Some events during Carers Week will have limited places. To ensure fairness, we are operating a booking system. Places will be limited to 2 per carer. We will confirm bookings nearer the time and will, as usual, keep a reserve list which we will use in case of cancellation. For each event, priority will be given to carers not already booked on another one. We will also be asking for a non-refundable deposit of £2 per person to secure your place. Please contact us if you are unable to attend to allow someone else to take your place.

As part of this event Colebrook Housing Society and The British Heart Foundation will be sponsoring “Have a Heart Day” for children and adults with a learning disability and their families / carers to raise awareness of heart disease and to learn how to keep your heart healthy.
This fun filled information day will give you:
access to a wide range of information on heart disease and risk factors
- information and advice on healthy lifestyles and healthy eating
- information and support / advice from a range of city wide organisations linked to health and social care
- an opportunity to try some healthy eating (lunch) and healthy activities
The British Heart Foundation and Heartswell South West, are working together to raise £97,000 for a 3D TOE scanner for Derriford Hospital. This new scanner will greatly assist the cardiac team and enable them to make more informed and speedier diagnoses. Ultimately it will mean more lives can be saved across the southwest peninsula. We will be holding a raffle on the day to support this local and very worthwhile appeal.
It will be an INTERACTIVE day for all the COMMUNITY – so do come along!!
Community Outreach Events 2009/2010
Carers are being invited to information and advice sessions which will be held in public places throughout Plymouth during 2009/2010.
We are organising the Community 'Outreach' Events during the next year. It is part of a drive to take support services to carers in the community, and in public places throughout the city.
We realise that not all carers can come into the city - you lead busy lives, so we want to reach out to you, and take our information into your communities, and make you aware of what's available. Also, some carers are socially isolated, and we want to connect with you, and provide you with support.
