Welcome to Carers Champions Plymouth

Welcome to Carers Champions Plymouth

Do you provide practical or emotional support to a family member, a friend or neighbour?

Do you see this as part of your role in the family or community?

Whether or not you consider yourself a ‘carer’ you are entitled to access help and support!

Colebrook Housing Society launched Carers Champions Plymouth on the 3rd September 2007 and aims to provide a flexible and responsive service supporting carers across the city. This service has been funded by Plymouth City Council since 2007 as part of the Council's commitment to carers in the city. Subject to necessary approvals, Plymouth City Council (PCC) has agreed to extend the Plymouth Carer Support Service provided by Carers Champions for a minimum of six months from 1st March 2012, whilst PCC continue to finalise their future commissioning plans. We will update you with further details when they are made available to us.

People who care for others now have access to more help and support from a new service in the city. Carers Champions Plymouth offers adult carers of adults a range of different services and opportunities including advice and information about issues that affect them, practical support and help to get services that they need for themselves and the person they care for. Many people take on a supporting role as part of their commitment to family, friends, neighbours, and may not even consider themselves carers, but are entitled to help

Carers Champions Plymouth offers Drop in sessions, information, outreach, training and peer support from other carers. Colebrook want this new service to be flexible and responsive to meet the needs of carers, and hope as many carers as possible will have a say in the services priorities. We believe that if more people use this service, the more they can enable carers voices to be heard to influence future services.

If you are a carer we are here to provide:

  • Advice and information about issues that affect you
  • Practical support sessions to carers and carers groups
  • Help to get any services that you need for yourself or the person you look after

Carers Champions Plymouth is committed to improving services for carers in the city and aims to work alongside carers themselves to be actively involved in the design, delivery and continuous improvement of our service. Our service aims to work with known carers and identify new/hidden carers.

A Sad Farewell and Thank you

hands

Chris Coombe at the launch of a previous Carers Rights Day.

Carers Champions staff and carers have all been very upset by the sad loss of Chris Coombe. Chris was a remarkable man, who worked alongside us in many ways – he was always thinking about better ways to support carers. In any situation, he knew someone who could help and he would get on the phone right away to make sure that carers received the help they needed. He was an encouragement and motivation to us, working tirelessly to ensure that carers’ services were able to work together.  Our lasting memory is being at Derriford Hospital foyer with Chris, where he showed genuine concern for the well-being of carers he met. After hearing about their situation, he would grab whichever one of us was there and say to them, ‘Now you talk to this young lady (or man) and she’ll sort you out!’
We will miss him especially this Carers Week, when he would have been actively promoting carers’ issues and rights – regardless of his own problems. Our thoughts continue to be with his family.
